Meet Nonna | A Notary & Tina Flood Co-creation

In October, 2024 some of the Notary team traveled to Puglia, Italy. In part to adorn a dear client’s home with custom lighting, in part to indulge in the slow pace of life that radiates throughout southern Italy, and in part to journey through the antique markets of these ancient whitewashed towns, like Ostuni and Martina Franca.

On one particularly successful visit to an open-air market, we came across the most darling piece. It was an immediate need and became an instant inspiration.

We call her Nonna, the Italian name for grandmother, perhaps for obvious reasons. She is charming, rosy-cheeked, and she commands your attention in the way any Nonna might. (Not to mention she is ready to feed you, like any Nonna might!)

To recreate this beauty, Sarah threw a deep plate and hand-ruffled its edge. Nonna’s body is made of a hand-thrown dome and her hand-built head and bonnet, made by Tina, our in-house glazer and artist extraordinaire, serve as her handle and bring her fully to life.

The choice to use a classic blue underglaze for her dainty details is a sweet nod to her Mediterranean roots. From the patches on her apron to her ruffled sleeves, Tina applied such love and attention to her that can be adored from every angle.

When you reveal the dish inside, you’re met with even more charm. The soft blue paintings bring to life herbs, lemon wedges, a sausage and sardines, all of which celebrates The Nonna’s diversity.

Use her to house and serve your freshly baked sweet treats or your favorite savory charcuterie. She is a piece to cherish, we certainly do.
