Notary is going to France!!!!

Hello sweet friends!

We want to invite you to a very special event that we are hosting alongside french florist Laetitia Mayor in the Champagne region of France this April.

It has long been a dream of ours to travel to France with our wares and to create beauty in the french countryside. We are happy to say that this year we are making this dream a reality. And we would love to share our experience with you! Please read on if you are interested in spending three beautiful and peaceful days at the bucolic Le Clos de la Robe, foraging for flowers, creating beautiful arrangements in custom Notary Ceramics pieces, eating and drinking and enjoying each others company.

Welcome to the Blossoms and Ceramique creative retreat. Hosted by Sarah of Notary ceramics and Laetitia of Florésie who will be teaching you all they know about floral design and tablescape styling with unique artisan’s pieces.

Escape to the gorgeous and luxurious Champagne region of France located just two hours outside of Paris where we will be staying at the authentic house of Le Clos de la Robe. Set in a small champagne city, surrounded by wild fields and vineyards, with its pretty vintage interiors, this house has an authentic and warm family feeling.

The retreat will be relaxed and free-spirited, allowing anyone to attend and create at their own pace. The number of participants will be limited to 10 so that the hosts have time for each of you and to ensure a quiet creative atmosphere.

Join us as we wine and dine traditional french cuisine at Le Clos de la Robe, explore the surrounding nature - barely waking up after winter, forage, create and capture beauty as we share secrets, stories, laugh, relax and enjoy our time together.

MEET THE HOSTS:

Sarah Van Raden- founder of Notary Ceramics
After taking a semester of ceramics in college it took almost a full decade before I found my way back to the wheel. This time the class I took was at a local art school where the room was filled with people from all ages and walks of life. I instantly fell back in love with clay. I love the way it makes me feel like a child again, carefree and full of possibilities. After throwing very sporadically for about a year I bought my own wheel, saved up for a small kiln, and emptied out my cluttered basement to clear the way for a make-shift studio. After a 10 year clay hiatus, and nearly a decade working as a photo stylist, I feel I have found my true talent and passion in creating pottery. The imperfection, the wobbles, the wonkyness, it all works to create a beautiful handmade product that reminds you of the person that spent their time creating it for you to enjoy.
My heart is in every piece and I am eager to share these pieces with you!

Laetitia Mayor- Founder of Floresie
Florésie is a living space, gentle and joyful where creativity is drawn from the laughter of children, the softness of chicken feathers, the singing snails, the surrounding cracked old stone walls and the scents of garden flowers, varieties often old, adorable in every stage of life that Laetitia learns every season to succeed a little better.
When Laetitia was a child, she was good at math, so naturally, she became an engineer. However after 10 years as a project manager, she realised that she was bored with solving equations and needed more beauty in her life. She decided to enroll in the floral design school of Paris and created the first french blog dedicated to floral art called Florésie in 2010.
Now a mother, Laetitia has turned her blog into a design studio set in the middle of the Picardy fields in France serving brides and grooms all over Europe, flourishing with a delicate and wild garden style.

VENUE:
Old Post House renovated in a bucolic and pastoral style, le Clos de la Robe, is a family owned house seized in the Champagne countryside near the city of Reims in France.

Directions: You can come to Reims in 45 minutes by high-speed train from Paris (Gare de l’Est). We will come and pick you up at the Reims train station if you need a lift to Vandeuil where the Clos is situated.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Wednesday April 18th:
Sarah and Laetitia will welcome you at le Clos de la Robe between 4 and 5 pm. You will have time to explore the gardens and surrounding wood, enjoy a chat with Sara and Laetitia around a cup of tea and homemade cake, read a chapter of your favorite book in your beautiful room, or, why not, just take a nap before the diner.

Thursday April 19th:
Thursday will be dedicated to floral design. Two classes will happen during the day. The first one will be dedicated to modern compote design with spring flowers and blossoms (a compote is a centerpiece size arrangement set in a footed bowl). The second one will be dedicated to creating ikebana inspired arrangements using foraged and locally sourced materials. Both the compote and ikebana bowl will be Notary Ceramics original pieces, with a unique glaze unique to that retreat. Your creations will be styled by Sarah and shot by our professional photographer, Chikae O.H.

Friday April 18th:
Sarah will demonstrate how to set and arrange a table in a way that highlights the arrangments we make in the workshop. Providing props in various textures to use on your styled table. We will have a talented photographer, Chikae O.H., on hand to capture your tablescapes, but we will also show you how to use your phone or camera to capture your own imagery in the minimal style which we utilize to photograph our ceramic pieces. We will then take our final lunch together and then have to say goodbye and farewell…

This schedule is just to give you an idea of what will be happening over the course of the retreat and is subject to change as we allow things to happen organically depending on weather and what people want to focus on.

This retreat is for you if you:
– Wish to learn floral design from Laetitia in unique vases, all levels welcomed
– Wish to discover Sarah’s secret to a minimal yet intentional tablescape styling
– Love to eat fresh and colorful French food
– Want to relax and take a well deserved holiday for yourself
– Want to meet like-minded creative people who will become friends for life

Female Creatives: Through Fujifilm’s Lens

Female Creatives: Through Fujifilm’s Lens was conceptualized to tell the visual story of three local women excelling in their respective creative fields. Each artist was chosen for their craft and unique eye for their art form. These women have paved a new road for what being a creative businesswoman embodies. These three are heroines both in their own story, and part of an unlikely but beautifully meaningful collective.

The Three Featured Artists

Dram Apothecary

A native to Colorado, Shae Whitney grew up on the plains and prairies amongst the rolling sage and musty pines where she developed a curious admiration for species of the plant kingdom. She then took this love and paired it with her years of experience as a bartender to create the recipes that are the heart of Dram.

A collegiate background in Food Science, Ecological Agriculture and Botany has also greatly influenced her work with Dram Apothecary.

Dram believes that the inclusion of bitter plants and herbs into our everyday diet is essential for vibrant health and agreeable digestion. All of DRAM’s products have been designed to offer the healing benefits of various plants while still tasting wonderful enough for use in cocktails and the kitchen.

Notary Ceramics

Sarah Van Raden began throwing ceramics in college and was absolutely terrible at it. She had a teacher that minimized all of his students and left her feeling discouraged. It took her 10 years to find her way happily back to the wheel.

This time, the class was filled with people from all ages and walks of life. She instantly fell back in love with clay. She loved the way it made her feel like a child again, carefree and full of possibilities. After throwing very sporadically for about a year she bought her own wheel, saved up for a small kiln, and emptied out a cluttered basement to make way for a studio.

After a 10 year hiatus and nearly a decade working as a photo stylist, she feels she’s found her true talent and passion in creating pottery. The imperfection, the wobbles, the wonkiness, it all works to create a beautiful handmade product that reminds you of the person that spent their time creating it for you to enjoy. Her heart is in every piece.

Molly Debiak

Molly Debiak is a graduate of Studio Jewelers Ltd. in New York City.

There, she was trained in the profoundly traditional ways of metal fabrication, lost wax casting, and diamond setting. With every piece she creates, she strives to achieve a balance between these precise methods and the imperfections of the organic world in which she finds her inspiration.

She currently resides in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA.

Project Brief

These creative women are among the best in their craft. They have built their businesses from scratch. Filming, production, and image creation surrounding this project was captured in early July 2017.

FUJIFILM North America Corporation has partnered with Kara Mercer to bring this project to life. An exhibit of each artist’s story will be told through the lens of FUJIFILM X Series and GFX system cameras.

There are two parts of this project: the image and storytelling component, which is perfect to be shared in print or digital form. This static component pairs perfectly with the in-person component of an exciting exhibition, which will fully present this brief in Seattle, WA.

Each woman’s story will be shared via images and film at the Female Creatives: Through Fujifilm’s Lens exhibit, and each creative will be physically present with their wares to showcase to art-lovers and consumers alike.

Emily Henderson blog

Emily Henderson

Emily used the notary candlesticks in her latest post for Parachute home. She styled a dining table in two styles. One casual and one formal. She used our candlesticks in the more formal setting. We love how she used the handmade nature of ceramics to create a comfortable yet elegant table, alongside beautiful silverware and glassware.
